School Readiness
School Readiness
Helping children feel confident, connected and ready to learn
At The Nurture Project, we believe school readiness is about so much more than learning letters and numbers.
It's about nurturing children who feel emotionally safe, connected and confident enough to participate in the exciting journey of starting school.
Every child develops differently, and there is no single pathway to becoming "school ready." Rather than focusing on perfection or achieving milestones by a certain age, we believe children thrive when they are supported to develop both their emotional wellbeing and the foundational skills that help them feel successful in a classroom environment.
Our approach is gentle, neuroaffirming and relationship-focusedâsupporting children to build confidence through connection, play and meaningful learning experiences.
What Does School Readiness Really Mean?
School readiness isn't about a child knowing everything before they start school.
It's about helping children develop the confidence and skills to engage with learning, build relationships and navigate new experiences with support.
When children feel emotionally safe, they are more available to:
- explore
- learn
- communicate
- solve problems
- build friendships
- develop independence
- enjoy school
Rather than asking,
"Can my child already do this?"
we encourage families to ask,
"How can we gently support my child to develop these skills over time?"
Our Holistic Approach to School Readiness
Our School Readiness Program combines a holistic, play-based approach with intentional learning experiences designed to support each child's transition into school with confidence.
Through small-group experiences, meaningful relationships and engaging activities, children are gently guided to develop the foundations that help them participate successfully in school life.
We focus on the whole childânot just academic skills.

How We Support Children
â¤ď¸ Emotional Wellbeing & Regulation
Feeling safe is the foundation for participation and learning.
Children are supported to develop:
- emotional awareness
- confidence
- resilience
- self-regulation
- flexibility
- coping strategies
These skills help children navigate new environments and everyday challenges with increasing confidence.
đ¤ Social Communication & Relationships
Positive relationships are a big part of school life.
Children have opportunities to develop:
- communication skills
- listening
- turn-taking
- cooperative play
- friendship skills
- problem-solving
- participation in group experiences
These experiences help children feel connected and included within their school community.
đż Independence & Everyday Participation
School brings many new routines and expectations.
Children are gently supported to practise everyday functional skills such as:
- following simple routines
- transitioning between activities
- managing personal belongings
- asking for help
- participating in group activities
- building independence
- adapting to new situations
The goal is to build confidence through supported participation.
𧊠Learning Through Play
Play is one of the most powerful ways children develop the skills needed for school.
Through engaging, meaningful activities, children naturally strengthen:
- attention and engagement
- listening and following directions
- problem-solving
- flexible thinking
- communication
- curiosity
- persistence
- early concept development
Rather than focusing on academic outcomes, we create opportunities for children to practise the underlying skills that support participation in classroom learning.
đ Sensory & Environmental Readiness
Every child experiences the world differently.
Children are supported to develop greater confidence participating in environments that may include:
- group activities
- different noise levels
- movement between spaces
- changing routines
- new people
- classroom expectations
We work with children to understand their individual sensory preferences and develop strategies that help them participate successfully.
Every Child Develops Differently
There is no single definition of "school ready."
Some children need extra support with emotional regulation.
Others benefit from developing communication, confidence, flexibility or independence before starting school.
Our role is not to change who children are, but to support them to participate in ways that honour their individual strengths, preferences and needs.
We believe readiness grows through relationships, encouragement and opportunities to practiseânot pressure.
Our Goal
Our goal is for every child to begin school feeling:
â confident
â capable
â connected
â emotionally supported
â understood
â ready to participate in their own way
Because when children feel safe, connected and supported, they are more able to engage with the people, routines and experiences that make up everyday school life.
Supporting Families Too
Starting school is a significant transition for the whole family.
To complement our School Readiness Program, we've developed our Gentle Transitions Parent Support Programâan eight-module series that helps parents understand emotional regulation, sensory needs, communication, school transitions, advocacy and ways to support their child's wellbeing throughout the transition to school.
